The monitor speakers in Studio 5 for rock and pop music, are none other than Tannoy. They were installed eight years ago when the owner wanted something with more power.
Studio 2 for rock. The monitor room is currently being re-modelled. A Solid State Logic console and Eastlake TM-3 monitor speakers have been installed and are currently being tested.
Studio 5, used for pop music, is equipped with four Tannoy rectangular yoke speakers with 38mm diameter original red speakers. These Tannoys were installed eight years ago because, at the time, they were the only speakers available that could withstand high power. Of the four speakers, the two on the outside are a stereo pair, the inner left one is used to monitor solo parts, and the remaining one is a spare.
In Studio 2, which is used for rock music, the monitor room was in the middle of being remodelled. The mixing console was a Solid State Logic console, and the monitor speakers were Eastlake TM-3B. The people working in the photo above are from Capitol Projects (see page 10), one of the four sound departments mentioned earlier.
For studios that use large amounts of power in their speakers, such as for rock and pop music, Eastlake and Tannoy speakers were used, apparently because the BBC’s monitor speakers up until then were rather weak at handling large amounts of power.
There are a total of six recording studios in Maida Vale, but not all of them are equipped with BBC monitor speakers.
When it comes to shopping in London, the world-famous Regent Street (1) is lined with luxury stores, including Burberry. It’s like Ginza in Tokyo, while Knightsbridge, the equivalent of Shinjuku, has recently become overflowing with young people. At the heart of this area is Britain’s largest department store, Harrods (10). Music lovers will also be interested in the audio district, Tottenham Court Road (11), which is lined with audio stores, though it’s nothing compared to the hustle and bustle of Akihabara. One thing to keep in mind when shopping in London is that stores are closed on Sundays.
It seems that Maida Vale’s recording studios are currently in the process of replacing their old and new equipment. Studio 6 is currently being remodeled, but each studio is independent and has been remodelled, so the construction work will not affect the other studios. This studio, which is slowly changing with a mix of old and new, is slowly changing, even though the interior is changing.
The exterior is unlikely to change for at least another 10 years. This is another example of the British character.
